Snieguolė Michelkevičiūtė. A Woman about Men

Snieguolė Michelkevičiūtė. A Woman about Men

2019 06 08 / Adam Mazur

The photographs of Snieguolė Michelkevičiūtė contradict the conventional perceptions of our world. We look to artists whenever we want to be provided with an unconventional take on life, but when it’s a woman who’s in charge of a revolution, the audience might feel slightly uncomfortable. The act is like a space with mines all over the floor, in a political and erotic sense. The form of the act itself was shaped when the canons of western art were in their initial stages, and now it flourishes in our contemporary culture, bursting also into the field of interest of Snieguolė Michelkevičiūtė.

Joachim Schmid: “I want to keep that”

Joachim Schmid: “I want to keep that”

2019 05 24 / Ugnė Makauskaitė

The Berlin-based artist and curator Joachim Schmid is best known for his unique way of seeing photography. In photographic theory, he is well known for several statements that shaken the medium’s field. In artistic practices he appropriates images from various social media channels, magazines, postcards, etc., and reuses them without any given context. The Lithuanian Photographers Association is showcasing his photoseries Bulderbuch (2011-). For the occasion, we present you with an interview with an artist whose thoughts on today’s photography reveal an unexpected philosophical approach and surprisingly deep insights.

Snapshots from Soviet Lithuania

Snapshots from Soviet Lithuania

2019 03 23 / Carole Naggar, The New York Review of Books

In a striking 1964 portrait by Antanas Sutkus, a young Lithuanian Pioneer doesn’t smile—despite the fact that it’s September 1, decreed by the Soviet Union’s Central Committee to be the first day of school, a day of celebration. Though the Pioneer is wearing his new uniform and knotted scarf, though schoolchildren are milling around, full of excitement, in a celebratory assembly, this young Pioneer with cropped blond hair is sulking, seemingly wondering what he is doing there, and what there is to celebrate.

Finding Strength in Ambiguity. ‘Kosmos’ by Antanas Sutkus at National Gallery of Art in Vilnius

2019 02 04 / Adam Mazur (Blok magazine)

The title of the retrospective exhibition in the Vilnius National Gallery emphasizes the position occupied by Antanas Sutkus on the Lithuanian art scene. It is a tribute to the master, whose life and work are presented by three curators. Gintaras Česonis, Thomas Schirmböck, Jean Marc Lacabe undertook the difficult task of dealing with the artist’s archive, with his myth, and with the powerful ego of the Sutkus.

Google did not kill photography

Google did not kill photography

2018 09 05 / Ilaria Speri

There are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are some things we don’t know. But there are also unknown unknowns – the things we don’t know we don’t know.

Machines, Methods and Humans: On the Production Line of Contemporary Photography

Machines, Methods and Humans: On the Production Line of Contemporary Photography

2018 09 01 / Alise Tifentale

If I were to curate a show of contemporary photography in 2018, I would first consult the photographers’ Instagram galleries instead of their artist’s statements and biographies. All that matters in photography today exists on the cloud and on the Internet. At the same time, there is also something archaic about photography. I like to think of photography as a typical nineteenth-century invention, a relic from the era when people were obsessed with recording, reproducing and transmitting images and sound. The computer is a product of the same nineteenth century whose recurring theme was delegating all kinds of work to a machine.

Debiutas – a military training ground for photography’s cosmos

Debiutas – a military training ground for photography’s cosmos

2018 06 29 / Aistė Kisarauskaitė

Thinking about the previous editions of the Debiutas [Debut] competition, I can’t help but feel disappointed that so many talented artists who took part or even won later vanished into other activities, apparently forgetting about the photographic quests they once cherished. However, there are also those who began careers with Debiutas and who we now call known artists – Virgilijus Šonta, Romualdas Požersis, Vytautas Balčytis, Raimondas Paknys, Violeta Bubelytė, Algirdas Šeškus, Gintautas Trimakas, Vytautas Stanionis, Aleksandras Ostašenkovas, Alfonsas Budvytis, Vilma Samulionytė and others.

Anamorphic Games of Slides: The Catalogue

Anamorphic Games of Slides: The Catalogue

2016 12 27

While introducing Aurelija Maknytė‘s book "Burning Slides" ("Degančios Skaidrės") at this year‘s Nida Art Photography Symposium, the publishers Gytis Skudžinskas and Vilma Samulionytė mentioned that it is different from the other “NeRutina“ books because it was published as a catalogue. The decision and the name that was given to it can be considered to be a metaphor, but can also be taken at face value – as a reference to reading and working with slides.

Algirdas Šeškus – TV

2016 12 27

Algirdas Šeškus always surprises. When it looks that his archive has been exhausted, he places a new book on the table and I can see that it is endless, and even the previously seen photos change their identity within the new context. For example, that man with glasses and a lucent face, neatly sitting behind an office desk – his pen is ready, he is going to write a rebuke.
