Hiro Tanaka (Japan)
Chicharrón
Moving from one place to another, going into familiar and unfamiliar scenes. Countless encounters during life on the road.
Things can be different but feel like their constant repetition under a pile of time and distance.
Often some random things just happen to you and we have no control over avoiding them.
Time and current can be twisted, Distance and space can be distorted, layers between reality and fantasy, true and false.
Explore the relationship between encounters, randomness and consequences through experience and memento.
An interesting coincidence led him to start taking photographs – after accidentally winning a free trip to the United States through raffles at a shopping mall in Tokyo, Tanaka started travelling with punk bands in the US and Europe, acquired his 1st camera from one of the band members while travelling and documenting the road.
He has won the Cosmos Arles PDF Award at Les Rencontres d’Arles (France), Sirmione Award for Photography Residence x Magnum Photos (Italy), TPD Book Award (Italy), among others. He was selected as a finalist and nominated for World Press Photo Global Talent, PHotoESPAÑA Premio al mejor libro, Gomma Photography Grant, Kassel Photobook Award, etc. He has received several grants, participated in residency programs in the US, Europe and Asia, exhibited at galleries and art/photo festivals, and published several monographs in different countries.
