Arnas Špaka (Lithuania)
When

This is a not yet realized book project of photographs taken from 2016 up to 2018. It consists of various glimpses into life as it was back then (when it was). The photographs were taken with various toy cameras, specifically used to reflect the transient moments of experience.

Arnas Špaka is a Lithuanian artist based between Vilnius and Brussels, working across analogue photography, writing, installation, and sculpture. His practice investigates the relationships between perception, recording, presence, and material conditions, often approaching photography not as an unstable system of interacting forces. Through self-archiving and spatial installations, he explores how attention and memory shape the production of meaning. Influenced by concepts of diffraction, material agency, and relational systems, Špaka constructs installations in which photographs, objects and viewing positions remain in active negotiation rather than resolving into singular narratives. His practice often examines the tension between observation and participation. Alongside his conceptual concerns, Špaka maintains a strong engagement with material and craft-based processes, including darkroom, silkscreen, risograph printing, woodworking, and metalworking. These processes form an integral part of his artistic methodology, allowing the physical properties and limitations of materials to actively shape the work. His approach treats tools and apparatuses as collaborators that influence form, and perception.
