Artist Statement
Chia-Yun Wu
"There is a border between Lithuania and Russia in Nida where I conducted an artist residency in May 2022. The concept of a border for me is abstract as I am from an island country where the border means the ocean. However, the border has divided the land here not only into two peninsulas but also two countries. I was attracted by the image of a border and wonder if there is a world without borders. A Borderless Place #1 is an artist’s book questioning being and nothingness. Through interviewing the wildlife, I want to ask the meaning of a border. Have humans become more civilized after creating numerous borders on Earth? From the Curonian Lagoon to the Taiwan Strait to the West Bank, wildlife without a country may be the most blessed creatures in the world; A Borderless Place #2 is an image series composed of photography and printmaking, RGB and CMYK, digital and material. It presents invisible borders within a natural environment to reflect the contracts between beauty and reality."
Chia-Yun Wu is a Taiwanese artist who was selected for a new Nida art residency program initiated by the Lithuanian Photographers Association.
