Andrew Miksys. Long-term Projects and Photographic Storytelling

Many photography projects often require a long-term commitment. It’s just not possible to photograph for one or two days and tell the story you want to tell. Projects that require weeks, months, or even years are not uncommon. Andrew Miksys spent nearly ten years photographing in Lithuanian village discos to make his "DISCO" book. He has been photographing Roma communities in Lithuania for almost 20 years now.

In this workshop, we will explore all aspects of long-term photography projects and storytelling. We will start from the basics, like, how to choose a project. If you’re going to photograph one subject for 10 years, you need to have the emotional and intellectual commitment to finish the project. We will also discuss practical issues, such as the following: how do you gain access to people and places you would like to photograph? What do you do with your project when it’s complete? Who is the audience for your project? How do you edit your photographs to tell the story in the most effective way? What is the final outcome of your project: an online product or making a book? How do you finance your project?  All these questions and more will be explored during this intensive workshop with Andrew Miksys.

The workshop is open to photographers of all levels: from beginners to professionals. Photographers who are currently working on a long-term project are encouraged to bring examples of their work to discuss during the workshop. All photographers must also bring a camera for exercises during the workshop. The workshop is limited to 10 participants. Some English would be helpful, but not required, as the workshop will be held in both English and Lithuanian.

Andrew Miksys (b. 1969) is an American-Lithuanian photographer. In 2002, he was selected by US professional photographers’ magazine "Photo District News" as one of the "Top 30 Emerging Photographers to Watch", and in 2006, he was featured in "Slate" magazine as "Slate’s Artist of the Month". Miksys has also been the recipient of prestigious grants from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation (2000) and the J. William Fulbright Program (1998 and 2002). He currently divides his time between Seattle, Australia and Vilnius, Lithuania.
