Deimantas Narkevičius began working with film in the early 1990s. His works employ a complex practice of memory and depict contemporary society as it confronts painful historical processes. Using either film or digital formats enabled him to explore multiple interpretations of historical narratives and to experiment with the perception of time’s flow. He has found the short film format to be an ideal medium for exploring both visual and sonic language.
In Narkevičius’s films, the dissonance between image and word underscores the impossibility of objective documentary. He avoids close-ups, a common feature in contemporary documentaries used to emphasize the sincerity of the speaker’s testimony. Often, the protagonists in his narratives are absent from the screen, replaced by associative objects, drawings, and archival footage.
In 2023, Narkevičius released his first full-length stereoscopic film, Twittering Soul.
