Raimundas Urbonas: “Life Under the Table and... On the Table”
How can one convey a vanishing world without words? How does photography become a medium not only of vision but also of memory and sensation?
This lecture explores one of the most subtle and enigmatic figures in late 20th-century Lithuanian photography, Raimundas Urbonas (1963–1999). A self-taught artist who quickly drew attention for his deep intuition, Urbonas was closely connected to the bohemian circles of Klaipėda and created visual micro-worlds of silence, domesticity, and historical memory – spaces where impermanence became the core aesthetic principle. What does it mean to photograph the "reverse" side of reality – the one we do not notice, but feel? How does one remain visible or remembered in the art world and its history when one’s work rejects noise, narrative, and grandeur? Is contemporary art discourse still capable of recognizing the value of silence?
This lecture will examine the aesthetics of silence, the themes of impermanence and ephemerality, and Urbonas’s place in the history of Lithuanian photography. It is intended not only as an introduction to the artist’s creative legacy but also as an invitation to reconsider shifting criteria of artistic evaluation.
