"Nothing but a Curtain" explores womanhood and gender identity in Central and Eastern Europe.
Zula Rabikowska is a Polish visual artist based in London. Zula was born in Poland and grew up in the UK. Her practice is influenced by her experience of migration and works with multimedia, film, digital and analogue photography, and incorporates archival images and documents to challenge conventional visual story-telling norms. Zula examines historical and political events in Central and Eastern Europe and their impact on identity and focuses on the relationship between reality and fiction.
Zula explores themes of displacement, identity, home, belonging, borders, community building and immigration. In her practice,. Zula seeks to offer a space for conversation and community building.
Zula is interested in dismantling European colonial structures and studied English and French at Warwick University at BA level where she focused on postcolonial literature. Zula moved to Martinique to examine postcolonial realities in the French Caribbean and obtained an MRes in Postcolonial literature.
Zula works as a photographer and photography lecturer at Kingston University. Zula has an MA in Documentary Photography from the London College of Communication. Zula co-founded the Red Zenith, a platform for supporting women and non-binary people with a connection to Central and Eastern Europe.
