A PHOTO EXHIBITION OF BRITISH PHOTOGRAPHER LAURA STEVENS „US ALONE”

From August 9th until September 2nd, Latvia’s Photography Museum presents photographer Laura Stevens’ work from the series „Us alone,” which will be exhibited on the 3rd floor of the museum. Photographs from „Us alone” depict couples in their homes and examine moments of tension and struggle between men and women who cohabit. These photographs are a departure from the traditional image of the happy, loving couple within the vernacular of photography and instead address the hidden, melancholy and even bored moments of coexistence. In her work, Laura wants to explore the disparity between partners striving for personal freedom and identity, alongside the need to act as part of a whole in creating a shared and unified reality. She‘s photographed real couples within their own homes, performing in a collaborative attempt to render visible the twofold existence of being a partner.  „Us alone” reveals a fine flair of color and light that in photographs develop an intimacy and a picturesque feeling.
Laura Stevens was born in 1977, England, but photographer lives and works In Paris, where part of the series „Us alone” was photographed. Stevens has a Postgraduate Diploma in sequential design, a Master's degree in Photography from the University of Brighton (UK) and bachelor’s degree in Graphic Arts and Design from Leeds Metropolitan University (UK). In 2009 and 2010, Stevens participated in photo workshops in Spain, and in 2005 she had an artist's residency in India. In 2010, Stevens was the winner of the Julia Margaret Cameron Award and in 2011 she was a Kaunas Photo Star 2011 Finalist. Photographer has participated at group exhibitions in the UK, France and the USA. This is her first solo show.

A PHOTO EXHIBITION OF SPANISH PHOTOGRAPHER ISABEL TALLOS „LOW COST”

From August 9th until September 2nd, Latvia’s Photography Museum will present the Spanish photographer Isabel Tallos’ series „Low cost”. As the photographer explains, this series is based on travel to 10 different cities in 10 different countries. The choice where to go was made based on the rules, set up by the artist herself – the starting point always needed to be Madrid, in each place no more than 3 days had to be spent, and during the project she couldn’t return to the same country twice but flight tickets mustn’t cost more than 30 EUR. Planning this trip became a type of mathematical algorithm for the artist.  Although „Low cost” is a lot more than just some travel notes in pictures. Isabel Tallos’ work is like a game between space and time in which any observer of her work gets involved. The photographer uses the architecture in various destinations from her travels – hotel rooms, museums, castles, churches even private housing and schools, but by practicing various photo manipulations, changing the natural proportions of the object, the viewers perspective gets challenged. Parallel to the interaction between reality and fiction, photographs from the series „Low cost” express an emptiness and calmness where in it seems like the only living being is the photographer herself.
Isabel Tallos was born in 1983, in Madrid. She has a BA degree in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid and an MA degree in Creative Photography from EFTI photography school in Madrid.  Tallos has participated in various group exhibitions in Spain, Germany, Peru, Italy and Lithuania. From 2006 to 2011, Isabel Tallos received local and international awards in Spain, but in 2008 she received the Roberto Villagraz scholarship. In 2011 her book „Isabel tallos. Low cost” was published, where along with the photographs, notes and sketches of the work in progress are printed.
