The very first association of amateur photographers in Lithuania was established in 1933. On the 15th of January the Union of Lithuanian Art Photographers celebrated its 70th anniversary.
Due to the historical circumstances (II World War, Soviet occupation) the first association’s activities were stopped. In 1969 after hard struggle with soviet bureaucracy there was established the Association of Lithuanian Art Photographers. The first chairman of newly established organization was declared A. Sutkus. The association united young photographers like A. Sutkus, A. Kunčius, A. Macijauskas, R. Rakauskas, V. Luckus, L. Ruikas who set the basement for so called Lithuanian photography school that up to the moment represent the classical Lithuanian photography. From the very beginning the organization was dynamic and active in its origin. According to the leader of organization A. Sutkus, association of Lithuanian Art Photographers, was the only one of such type in whole Soviet Union. Basically the association was occupied with arranging the photography exhibitions, seminars, supporting the photographers with equipment and technological materials. Special attention was always paid to young generation of photographers thus seeking to continue the tradition of Lithuanian photography. In 1989 the Association was renamed into the Union of Lithuanian Art Photographers. The members of the Union of Lithuanian Art Photographers have to pay membership fee and to participate actively in artistic life (to arrange exhibitions, present their works for catalogues and journals published by the Union, etc.).
In 1973 Association of Lithuanian Art Photographers opened Vilnius photography gallery, which was the only one exhibition space devoted to the photography art at the time. In 2000 when Lithuania was already an independent state the Union of Lithuanian Art Photographers has opened a new photography gallery. New exhibition space was named Prospekto (eng. avenue) gallery after the title of Gedimino avenue where it is situated. Three exhibition halls of Prospekto gallery take an area of 120 sq.m. At the average the duration of the exhibition is 2-3 weeks. The gallery shows a wide range of photography stiles: documentary, social, conceptual, color, commercial, historical, computer simulated etc. | |
